ERC Starting Grant 2026: Call Now Open!
The European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grants are now open for applications. These prestigious grants are designed to support outstanding Principal Investigators (PIs) in all scientific fields who are ready to establish their own independent research team or programme.

Key facts about ERC Starting Grants
Eligibility: Researchers of any nationality with 2–7 years of experience since the successful defence of their PhD (or equivalent doctoral degree). Extensions may apply under specific circumstances (see the latest ERC Work Programme).
Fields: Open to all areas of research.
Host Institution: Research must be conducted in a public or private research organisation (Host Institution/HI) located in an EU Member State or Associated Country. This can be the applicant’s current institution or a new one.
Funding:
Up to €1.5 million per grant.
An additional €2 million may be requested to cover:
Start-up costs for researchers moving from outside the EU/Associated Countries.
Purchase of major equipment.
Access to large facilities.
Significant experimental or fieldwork costs essential for the project.
Coverage: Grants may fund 100% of eligible direct research costs, plus 25% for indirect costs.
Duration: Up to 5 years.
Evaluation criterion: Solely based on scientific excellence of both the researcher and the proposal.
Frequency: Calls are published once per year.
ERC Synergy Grants Call 2026 – Open Until 5 November
The European Research Council (ERC) Synergy Grants 2026 call is now open! Applications are accepted until 5 November 2025.
These grants are designed to tackle truly bold scientific challenges, funding groups of up to four excellent Principal Investigators (PIs) who jointly push the frontier of knowledge with a ground-breaking research proposal. Any field of research is eligible.
Special note: A Synergy Grant Group may include up to one PI hosted or engaged in a third country, including in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico or any other LAC country.

Who may apply?
A group of two to four PIs (one designated as the corresponding PI, cPI).
PIs must bring complementary skills and resources to address ambitious problems.
No formal academic training requirements are foreseen.
Applicants must demonstrate a competitive track record appropriate to their career stage.
Host Institutions
Research must be conducted at a public or private research organisation (Host Institution, HI) in an EU Member State or Associated Country.
PIs may be hosted by more than one HI.
Up to one HI may be based outside the EU or Associated Countries, e.g. in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, or another LAC country.
What do ERC Synergy Grants offer?
Funding of up to €10 million for 6 years (pro rata for shorter projects).
An additional €4 million may be requested to cover:
Eligible start-up costs for PIs moving to the EU or Associated Country.
Major equipment purchases.
Access to large facilities.
Extensive experimental or fieldwork costs.
Grants may cover 100% of eligible direct research costs, plus 25% for indirect costs.

The ERC Synergy Grants represent a unique opportunity for research teams to combine expertise, generate true scientific breakthroughs, and shape the future of knowledge.
Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships 2026–27
The Swiss Confederation awards Government Excellence Scholarships each year to promote international exchange and research cooperation with over 180 countries.
For the 2026–27 academic year (starting 1 September 2026), scholarships are available for:
- Research fellowships
- PhD programmes
- Postdoctoral research
- Art scholarships apply only to certain countries – no Latin American countries in this call
Eligibility: Highly qualified young researchers with a Master’s or PhD (depending on the programme), born after 31 December 1990, and nominated by a Swiss academic supervisor.
Funding: Monthly stipend of CHF 1,920 (research/PhD) or CHF 3,500 (postdoc), covering living expenses for one person.
Host institutions: Research must be carried out at a Swiss public university, federal institute of technology, university of applied sciences, or research institute.
Applications are submitted through Swiss embassies in the applicant’s country of origin.
